December 14, 2017: Lake Gogebic Area Snowmobile Trail Report
Good morning from Lake Gogebic where we are most definitely going to have a White Christmas! Gogebic Area Grooming held a meeting last night and we wanted to ensure that we followed up with an update. In October we had over 2 feet of snow, followed by a warmup and then another dumping of 2 feet of snow. Therefore, the ground has not had an opportunity to fully freeze.
Meanwhile, late fall logging operations took a devastating toll on our trail system and there are two areas around Lake Gogebic that need re-routes due to damage caused by logging operations. The first is on the Northwest corner of Lake Gogebic near M28 & M64, and the second is on 13 South near the Root Cellar, The Board at GAG (Gogebic Area Grooming) are in the process of obtaining the necessary easements from private land owners, and putting a plan in place to get these re-routes complete and have those trails operational and groomed before Christmas.
It is very important to note that all 3 of the Gogebic Area Grooming machines are in 100% working condition and we have a great deal of confidence in the leadership of GAG who are determined toward making the Lake Gogebic Area trails the best in the UP.
Grooming is scheduled to start this weekend with Trail 8 East to Ewen and 1 North to White Pine. Those are the only 2 trails that do not require water travel. Most trails need additional time to freeze because of all the snow that we have received. If you are going to ride, please use extreme caution and take it easy on these early season trails. There is over 5″of ice in the bay on Lake Gogebic and while ice has formed on the big lake, we are not recommending lake travel.
Temps are forecasted to get into mid-20’s for the next few days, however by early next week they drop into single digits for several days before, during, and after Christmas. John Dee is saying 12-24″ of snow between Dec 17-22. We’ll get these re-routes in place, we’ll have a Merry Christmas, and then we most certainly can look forward to celebrating a very Happy New Year!
We will provide you with updates on trails and lake travel on our website, our Facebook page, and at www.snowtracks.com
We could seriously use some help, and if you find yourself with some time and a chainsaw, we’ll give you a free night stay at the Walleye Lodge. Give us a call at 906-575-3557. Thanks everyone and Merry Christmas!
